And he prayed to the Lord and said, O Lord, were not these my words while I was yet in my land? Therefore I anticipated to flee to Tarshish, because I knew that you are merciful and compassionate, long-suffering and very merciful, and repenting concerning the evils.

And Jonah went out from the city and sat opposite the city, and made for himself there a shelter, and sat under it in the shade, until he should see what would happen to the city.

And the Lord God appointed a gourd, and it came up over the head of Jonah to be a shade above his head, to overshadow him from his trouble, and Jonah rejoiced over the gourd with a very great joy.

And it came to pass, at the sun’s rising, that God commanded a burning scorching wind, and the sun struck upon Jonah’s head, and he fainthearted, and he was asking for the taking away of his life, and he said, It is better for me to die than to live.

And shall I not spare Nineveh, the great city, in which more than twelve myriads of men dwell, who do not know their right hand from their left, and many cattle?
