And the man of Ephraim said to him, What is this word that you have done to us, not to call us when you went out to make war in Midian? And they contended with him strongly.
Into your hand the Lord gave the rulers of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb, and what was I able to do as you? And their anger against him subsided, when he spoke this word.
And he said to the men of Succoth, Give now loaves to the people who are with me, because they are hungry, and I am pursuing after Zebee and Salmana, kings of Midian.
And Gideon said, Not so, in the giving of the Lord Zebee and Salmana into my hand; then I will thresh your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with the briers.
And he went up from there to Penuel and spoke to them according to these things, and the men of Penuel answered him in the same way as the men of Succoth answered him
And Zebee and Salmana were in Karkar, and their camp with them, about fifteen thousand, the ones left from all the camp of the sons of the east; and the ones who had fallen were one hundred and twenty thousand men who drew sword.
And Gideon went up by the way of those dwelling in tents east of Nobah, opposite Zebah and Zalmunna, and he struck the camp, and the camp was trusting.
And Gideon came to the rulers of Succoth and said to them, Behold Zebee and Salmana, because of whom you taunted me, saying, Is the hand of Zebee and Salmana now in your hand, that we should give bread to your weary men?
And he took the rulers and the elders of the city and taught them with the thorns of the wilderness and the bārakēnim, and he taught men of Succoth with them.
And he said to Zebee and Salmana, Where are the men whom you killed in Tabor? And they said, As you are, so were they; each one like you, like them, in appearance, the form of sons of kings.
And Gideon said, They are my brothers and sons of my mother; and he swore to them, As the Lord lives, if you had kept them alive, I would not have killed you.
And Zebee and Salmana said, Rise up, you and meet us, for as a man is his strength. And Gideon arose and killed Zebee and Salmana and took the crescent ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.
And Gideon said to them, I will ask of you a request, and give me each man an earring from his spoil, for they had many golden earrings, because they were Ishmaelites.
And the weight of the golden earrings that he had asked for was one thousand and seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescents and the pendants, the purple garments that were on the kings of Midian, and besides the golden neck-chains that were on the necks of their camels.
And Gideon made it into an ephod and set it in his city, in Ephratha; and all Israel went whoring after it there, and it became a snare to Gideon and to his house.
And Midian was humbled before the sons of Israel, and they did not continue to lift up their head; and the land was quiet forty years in the days of Gideon.
And it came to pass, when Gideon died, that the sons of Israel turned away and went whoring after the Baalim, and they made for themselves Baal-berith as a covenant, that it might be to them as a god.
